The article describes the results of a study carried out with 481 psychology students from five universities in Nicaragua, Chile and Spain, three countries with different levels of socioeconomic development. The risk of suffering certain stressful life events and the quantity and characteristics of the stressors suffered are analyzed, as well as their relationship with the level of development of the country in which the participants live, their social class and the level of hopelessness manifested by them. The information was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The results obtained indicate a greater incidence in the experience of stressful life events among the participants who live in countries with lower levels of development, and among those who belong to the most disadvantaged social classes. The results also point to a relationship between the number of vital events suffered and the level of hopelessness expressed by the interviewees.
