Abstract

Background: Although Psidium guajava L. and Persea americana Mill. are widely consumed and recognized for their nutritional value, local scientific evidence concerning their antioxidant profiles determined under standardized analytical methods remains scarce. This knowledge gap limits their potential exploitation in health-related and economic applications. This study aimed to evaluate the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in the pulp of Psidium guajava L. (guava)
and  Persea americana Mill. (avocado). Methodology: Thirty grams of pulp were analyzed using three biological replicates. The treatments consisted of evaluating 80 % ethanolic extracts obtained from the pulps of both fruits. Spectrophotometric
methods were applied, including Folin-Ciocalteu for total phenolic content (TPC),  alongside DPPH and FRAP assays for antioxidant capacity. Results: Psidium guajava L. exhibited a higher antioxidant capacity in the DPPH assay (65.40%) and a total  phenolic content of 52.08%, attributable to its high concentration of vitamin C and water-soluble compounds. Conversely, Persea americana Mill. showed superiority in the FRAP assay (64.83%) and a total phenolic content of 47.93%, standing out for its significant reducing-power antioxidants. Conclusion: Both fruits exhibit complementary antioxidant profiles; P. guajava is rich in hydrophilic compounds, while P. americana excels in lipophilic content, demonstrating high potential for the development of functional foods.
