Abstract

The internationalization of higher education has become a novel dynamic that has to be integrated into the classic functions of educational institutions, in affinity with a knowledge without borders that develops in the globalization scenario. By incorporating the international and intercultural dimension, an increase in educational quality is promoted, at the same time that it imposes challenges on the structure and university management regarding its problems around Research, Teaching and Social Projection, service to the community and the autonomy. When considering such challenges, the key to a new university must be based on sustainable human development, a culture of peace, solidarity and permanent education, all based on a significant transformation of the higher education system, a strategic support for development. . To analyze internationalization from the institutional sphere, in the essay entitled The internationalization strategy of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, León: where are we going?, a systemic analysis is proposed. Part in the first place, from its conceptualization, in the field of higher education. Then, it includes a brief history and background of internationalization, the main indicators proposed according to the reality addressed and its relationship with the development of substantive functions at UNAN - León, as well as its current perspectives, such as comprehensive internationalization. Finally, various points for discussion are exposed in relation to the structuring of an internationalization plan at the university.
