Psychological factors and substance use related to prevalence of suicidal ideation high school students in the municipality of León, Nicaragua.

Suicide is the self-inflicted act to cause death voluntarily in which desire, ideation and the suicidal act intervene, it represents one of the ten main causes of death in America, and in the adolescent population it is among the three first causes of death. The objective of this study was to analyze the psychological factors and substance use related to the prevalence of suicidal ideation in high school students in the municipality of León Nicaragua during the period September 2022. It is an epidemiological, analytical study of nested cases and controls, universe 250 students, the data collection process was developed through an online survey completed by students in the classroom, responding to the scale of perceived stress PSS14, family APGAR, HADS test, PH test Q-9 and it is an ASSIST test. 32% of high school students have presented thoughts of taking their own life, 30% have expressed thoughts of taking their own life or harming themselves, study participants who have attempted suicide correspond to 17%. There is a relationship between family dysfunction and depressive symptoms which increase up to 8 times the risk of suicidal ideation in high school students. Alcohol consumption decreases the cases of suicidal ideation due to the displacement of priorities in coping with negative situations, thus representing the pattern of avoidance behaviors which will exacerbate the cases of suicidal ideation in late adolescence.
