Abstract

Background: Birds are a key biological group for ecological monitoring, as they respond rapidly to environmental disturbances and provide ecosystem services such as pest control, seed dispersal, and pollination. The purpose of this research is to determine the diversity and dominance of birds in the city of León, Nicaragua. Methodology: The study was conducted in the Antenor Sandino Hernández, Lino Argüello, and Concepción de María neighborhoods of León. Observations were carried out during the morning (6:00 to 8:00 am) and afternoon (4:00 to 6:00 pm) shifts. Bird counts were performed at fixed points along a 1.5 km transect, with counts taken every 100 meters, allowing for a 20-meter observation range at each point and a 15-minute observation time. Birds were visually identified using binoculars. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') and the Simpson dominance index (D) were determined. Results: A total of 28 species distributed among 13 families were recorded. Five migratory bird species were also recorded. The Concepción de María neighborhood showed the highest diversity values according to Shannon-Wiener (H’=2.55) and the lowest Simpson dominance index (D=0.10). There was no significant difference in abundance between the study areas. Conclusion: This research demonstrates that the urban neighborhoods of the city of León function as vital ecosystems for biodiversity, as they are home to both resident and migratory bird species.
