Abstract

Background: Urban green spaces play a key role in biodiversity conservation and the provision of ecosystem services, particularly in tropical dry cities.;universities can function as strategic reservoirs of tree vegetation within urban matrices. The objective of this study was to determine the diversity and structure of tree vegetation in three campuses of the main site of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, León (UNAN-León). Methodology: A floristic and structural inventory was conducted, including taxonomic identification and measurements of diameter at breast height (DBH) and total tree height. Result: A total of 3,291 trees were recorded, belonging to 72 species and 26 botanical families. Native species accounted for 68% of the total, while 32% were exotic species. Fabaceae was the most abundant family, followed by Meliaceae. Diversity indices (Shannon, Simpson, and inverse Simpson) indicated moderate to high diversity and a relatively even distribution of species across campuses. The diameter structure showed a high proportion of individuals in lower DBH classes, characteristic of young and managed vegetation. Significant differences in DBH and tree height were detected among campuses (p < 0.001), reflecting distinct structural patterns and management histories. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the UNAN-León campuses represent urban green spaces with a high representation of native species and complementary ecological functions, providing a baseline for future monitoring and for promoting sustainable urban vegetation management in the city of León.
