Toxotrypana curvicauda is one of the key pests that affects Carica papaya, laying its eggs in the fruit and causing it to fall prematurely, resulting in significant losses. Knowing that C. papaya is a crop in high demand and that, thanks to its properties, it is a fruit of economic interest, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of handmade traps on the management and behaviour of the fruit fly T. curvicauda. A three-factor experiment was carried out using a completely randomised block design, in which 12 treatments with 3 factors (odour, colour and shape) and 1 control (McPhail trap) were established in 3 blocks with 8 samples. The results showed that the orange cylindrical traps with odour obtained an average of 44.87 in insect abundance, an average of 4.75 in richness in yellow cylindrical traps with odour, while for the capture of T. curvicauda, the yellow rectangular traps without odour presented an average of 0.42. green cylindrical traps with scent achieved an average of 0.77 for species diversity, and T. curvicauda was most frequently found in yellow rectangular traps without scent, with an average of 41.67. The plant containing the orange cylindrical trap with scent showed more damage than the rest, with 10.9 per cent. In conclusion, the handmade rectangular yellow traps without odour had a positive effect both in attracting Toxotypana curvicauda and in attracting a variety of insects that in one way or another cause damage to papaya crops.
