The study focused on determining the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in people over 20 years of age in the urban area of Nicaragua.
The population over 20 years of age was selected, using the projection of the 2010 census in the northern, central and Pacific capitals of Nicaragua. The Caribbean Coast was excluded due to feasibility problems. The selected capitals were chosen at random, stratifying the sectors of each capital for the selection of the population, which once the places were defined, the participants were randomly selected using the lottery method. The calculation of the sample size was made using the Epidemiological Program EPIINFO version 6.04, using a frequency of 0.5, a maximum permissible error of 3% and a confidence interval of 95%, the total sampled being multiplied by two to avoid the error for the design effect. In the end, a total of 3150 surveys were interviewed who were asked for general data, data on risk factors for Diabetes Mellitus and a measurement of biological variables (blood pressure, heart rate, pulse, weight, height, waist, hip and measurement of blood glucose either fasting or casual blood glucose)
The results show the prevalence was 9.5%; 6.1% turned out to be prediabetic and 84.4% at the time of the survey did not suffer from the disease. There was a predominance of Diabetes in the male sex with 12.9% and in the female sex.
