Feasibility study of the Virtualization of Servers applied to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua (MINREX), Managua 2012

Abstract

The virtualization of servers is currently one of the most important facets within the modernization trends of the business world, the virtualization of computer systems is used to alleviate and in many cases eliminate the under-use of servers. Faced with these new trends and with the aim of being at the forefront, the MINREX is thinking about the virtualization of the network services it offers, to alleviate the lack of hardware resources it currently faces; however, before proceeding with this virtualization, a study is necessary to obtain information on the viability of this process; being able to identify the main barriers that virtualization faces, as well as the most appropriate software to carry out this process. The type of research that was carried out was an exploratory cross-sectional study, where it was possible to identify the initial cost and the lack of qualified personnel as the main barriers to the virtualization process. However, the most determining factors to carry out this process are: savings in hardware resources, minimization of energy consumption and greater operational efficiency, with the most suitable implementation software being VMWare and VirtualBox.
