Abstract

The main physiological function of sleep is to improve physical and mental performance. This occurs when sleep is of good quality and depends on various factors. Understanding sleep quality, the factors that influence it, and potential disorders provides a basis for seeking preventive alternatives. The objective of this research was to describe the factors that determine quality sleep among medical residents at the Oscar Danilo Rosales Teaching Hospital. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted with 60% of the residents from all specialties. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used as the measurement tool; it provides a global sleep quality score and partial scores in seven components. The factors affecting quality sleep are work-related and include coffee consumption, across all specialties. The main sleep disorders experienced by medical residents are: sleep-onset insomnia, sleep maintenance insomnia, and non-restorative sleep, all of which impair concentration in carrying out assigned tasks. It was concluded that the sleep quality of the surveyed medical residents had a score greater than 5 points, which is considered POOR SLEEP QUALITY. The specialty with the highest score was Internal Medicine.
