Abstract

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of neonatal deaths worldwide and is directly related to maternal colonization at the time of delivery. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, including a total of 120 pregnant women attended at the “1ro de Mayo” Health Center in León, with the objective of identifying the frequency of Group B Streptococcus, as the identification of this bacterium plays a positive role in preventing perinatal infections. The frequency of GBS found was 11%. Of the participants, 78% were housewives. Regarding colonization by age, 36% of the participants were under 19 years old and had initiated sexual activity at an early age (12–16 years). Additionally, 55% of the colonized participants were between 20–29 weeks of gestation. The pathological conditions most frequently observed among the colonized participants were leukorrhea (73%) and urinary tract infections (64%). The antibiotics of choice for GBS infection showed a sensitivity of 77% to penicillin, 62% to clindamycin, and 54% to erythromycin. As for antimicrobial resistance, 92% of the strains were resistant to gentamicin and 77% to oxacillin. Early initiation of sexual activity is associated with a higher frequency of GBS colonization. The predominant pathological conditions in the participants were leukorrhea and urinary tract infections. The treatment of choice for GBS infection used in the studied population is not 100% effective.
